Our Town Principles

Principles that connect us and guide our work together

Our Town takes a principles-led approach which provides a framework for decision-making that is both values-driven and adaptable to different contexts of communities. This allows for flexibility in decision-making, as it focuses on overarching principles rather than fixed rules. This adaptability is particularly valuable to community-led innovation, collaboration between communities and system actors and to the exchange and support across the Our Town network of communities.

Our Towns’ principles are shared ways of being and doing that

  • serve as a moral and ethical compass, guide behaviour, actions, and decisions, underpinning a culture of/sense of responsibility and accountability - to self, to community, to the network, to collaborators.

  • play a central role in shaping actions and choices, guiding decision-making and problem solving processes, supporting distributed power and accessibility

  • underpins a focus on outcomes (over activities and outputs), encourages continuous reflection and improvement based on experiences and feedback and underpins Our Town’s MEL framework; view risks through the lens of guiding principles, allowing for a more nuanced and process around risk (rather than avoidance risk strategy)
